Suggested Recordings

Bernstein: Candide Overture

Bernstein conducts Bernstein - New York Philharmonic

Shostakovich: Cello Concerto #2

Gautier Capuçon with Mariinsky Orchestra of Saint-Petersburg. Generally has similar tempos to what our soloist Davis You takes

Respighi: Feste Romane

Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra with Mariss Jansons conducting. YouTube recording not available. But you may also try the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain under Vasily Petrenko.

Ravel: Tzigane

This is Grace Huh's latest version of how she plays the work. I would strongly suggest that EVERYONE who plays Ravel listen to this, and more than once. The freedom and the slowing down and speeding up, etc. is significant and we need to be ready for her. I really WANT my orchestra to perform well in sync in with the YAC soloist. Have a good look at the music, which in itself is not difficult in any way, except for perhaps a few spots in the winds.

With soloist and orchestra, the recording of Itzhak Perlman with New York Philharmonic, conducted by Zubin Metha, is always a favorite of mine.

Bates: Devil's Radio

Please CLICK HERE for the audio recording of this piece.

Copland: Clarinet Concerto

Benny Goodman with Columbia Symphony Strings. Aaron Copland, conductor.

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5

Neeme Jarvi conducting Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Copland: Billy the Kid, Ballet Suite

The Copland Collection: Copland conducting London Symphony Orchestra

Stookey: The Composer is Dead

The San Francisco Symphony

Gershwin: Concerto in F

Soloist and Conductor André Previn with the London Symphony Orchestra. This is the ONLY recording anyone should ever listen to.
