Young Artist Competition

2018-19 Young Artist Competition

Each spring the California Youth Symphony holds its Young Artist Competition to select soloists for the following season. This year’s Competition was held at Stanford University, Campbell Recital Hall, on Sunday, April 15, 2018. Thank you to all the participants this year. Our panel of three judges have chosen the following 2018-19 season winners:

Piano Division
1st Prize: Catherine Huang (Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini)
2nd Prize: not awarded
Honorable Mention: Oliver Moore (Liszt Totentanz)

Instrumental Division:
1st Prize: Abigail Leong (Dvořák Cello Concerto)
2nd Prize: Sarah Chong (Haydn Cello Concerto in D Major)

Congratulations to our 2018-19 season winners. We are looking forward to some fabulous performances next season!

About the Young Artist Competition


The Competition is open to pianists and instrumental soloists under age 19. Two young artists will be chosen by a panel of three judges to perform with the CYS Orchestra during the November or March concert series of the following season. A monetary award will also be presented to the winners.

IMPORTANT: Guidelines for acceptable/non-acceptable will be updated for the following 2019-20 Season. Please pay careful attention to the guidelines in preparation for next year's Young Artist Competition.



Congratulations to our 2017-18 season winners:

1st Prize Winner: cellist Davis You, performing Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2
2nd Prize Winners: clarinetist Raymond Wyant performing Copland's Clarinet Concerto and violinist Grace Huh performing Ravel's Tzigane. We are looking forward to some extraordinary performances this year!
