CYS Associate Orchestra

Season Finale Concert

The Associate Orchestra concludes its season with romantic favorites by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, as well as featuring our Concerto Competition winner Peyton Chen. Our program also includes Aaron Copland’s An Outdoor Overture, composed in 1938 for the High School of Music and Art in New York, as well as the delightful Solo de Concert for Oboe and Orchestra by the French composer Verroust. As a special bonus, the orchestra will encore its March performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliant Capriccio espagnole. Maestro Eylar is especially delighted to offer the first-ever performance in CYS history of Tchaikovsky’s Fatum (“Fate”), an early work by the composer that is filled with glorious Tchaikovsky melodies as well as moments of high drama and passion. Don’t miss this exciting season finale!

Associate Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner

Peyton Chen began his oboe studies at age ten. Peyton has been with CYS for two years and studies under Yu-Ting Wang. Peyton has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2014 and 2015. Peyton won first place in American Protégé’s International Woodwinds and Brass Competition for his age group. Peyton’s oboe performances won multiple prizes at the 2014 U.S. Open Music Competition and 2nd place at American Protégé’s International Romantic Music Competition. Peyton was selected as a member of the California All-State Honor Band in 2014 and 2015. Peyton enjoys sharing music with the community and has performed in community events, including the Santana Row Christmas Tree Lighting. Peyton’s passion for the oboe began serendipitously. While listening to Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, the oboe, representing the duck character, and its expressive tone caught his attention. That day, he became an oboist. Peyton is currently in 8th grade at Lawson Middle School.
