Eric Xu, clarinet, is a senior at Lynbrook High School and one of the three winners of the annual CYS Senior Soloist Competition. He began playing clarinet in 6th grade and is currently studying with Michael Corner, his teacher for the past five years. Eric has been with CYS for four years, where he is the principal clarinetist of the Symphony Orchestra. Outside of CYS, he is a five-year member of the California All-State Honor Band and a six-time command performance recipient at regional and state CMEA Solo and Ensemble Festivals. He is also the concertmaster of the Lynbrook High School Wind Ensemble. As vice president of Lynbrook’s Music for Community club, he performs at senior centers, retirement homes, and community events to share the gift of music with a larger audience. Besides being a passionate musician, Eric is an active member of Future Business Leaders of America, previously serving as co-president of the Lynbrook chapter and currently serving as the Bay Section President and State Vice President. In addition, Eric is an avid chess player, as he is the president and captain of the Lynbrook Chess Team and a tournament director at the non-profit Bay Area Chess, Inc. Eric has also conducted scientific research for the past three years, served as a cultural ambassador to Cambodia two years ago, and plays the piano for his church. His awards include Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalist, National Merit Finalist, and National AP Scholar. He will be attending Princeton University in the fall.
